The MGM Deemed University has been originally notified as a Deemed to be University in the name and style of “MGM Institute of Health Sciences vide Notification No. F.9-21/2005-U.3 (A) dated 30.08.2006 issued by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education New Delhi. Following a letter issued by the UGC allowing the Deemed Universities to use the word ‘University' with their name, the Board of Management MGM Institute of Health Sciences decided to rename the Institution as MGM University of Health Sciences.
Sponsoring Society/Trust of the Deemed University
The sponsoring trust of MGM Deemed University is Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) Trust, which was established in 1982, with a view to propagate education, research and service to humanity at large. In its journey of commitments to the nation for more than 25 years, the MGM Trust has established a number of educational institutions running mainly in medical, dental, nursing, engineering, architecture, management, law, journalism, Indian Languages, music, dance etc. These institutes of the trust are located at Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad , Nanded & Parbhani in Maharashtra and Noida in UP, having a strength of more than 15,000 students. All these institutions are run under the able guidance of Shri Kamalkishore Kadam, M.Tech (IIT-Mumbai), Chairman of the Trust and Ex-Minister of Education, Maharashtra and the trustees Shri Ankushrao N. Kadam (B.E.), Dr. P.M. Jadhav (FRCS,U.K.), Dr. S.N. Kadam (FRCP Edin), Dr. Nitin N. Kadam (MD,DCH) and Shri U.N. Kadam (B.E). The institutions under MGM Trust have achieved a mark of excellence in their respective areas over the years.

Background of the Institution:
The Deemed University status was conferred to the Institutions Namely MGM Medical College Navi Mumbai and MGM Medical College Aurangabad which were established in the year 1989 and 1990 respectively with permission of government of Maharashtra . The MBBS and Postgraduate Courses of the colleges under reference as above have been recognized by Medical Council of India from time to time.
As per the norms of UGC, MGM Institute of Health Sciences, Navi Mumbai is registered under Society under Societies Registration Act, 1860 as well as under Bombay Public Charitable trust Act with its Registration Number – MAH-177/06 (Society Registration Act.) and Registration Number – F-5466 (Raigad) under BPT Act.

Consequently, MGM Deemed University sought permission to start nursing and other biomedical courses, which are allied to the core specialization of, have been started by the university in accordance to the notification of Central Government No.2-1/2006 U.3 (A) dated 5th April 2006:
